We might be a long way off from the flying cars that we were once promised would be a part of our futures, but that doesn’t mean that there is nothing exciting to look forward to in terms of the future of developments in automobiles. Consumer cars are becoming more sophisticated by the day thanks to an assortment of technological advancements. But what we are seeing today is nothing compared to what’s in store for us.

To prove this point, here are some of the most popular predictions for the direction that the automobile industry is due to take in the days to come.

A growth in the electric car market

We have already seen the presence of electrically powered cars creeping onto roads all over the world. The going is fairly slow at the moment, mostly due to a lack of infrastructure, little trust in the new technology as well as concerns surrounding a global energy crisis.

Regardless, we can expect electric cars to become the norm in the years to come; that is of course, if hydrogen power doesn’t pull its sock up.

Hydrogen might outdo electric

The current availability of hydrogen powered vehicles is fairly limited, and it’s because the potential of this mode of transport has yet to be reached. They currently offer very little in terms of advantages to performance, mileage, running costs and investment price, but that is all expected to change as the technology develops.

Hydrogen is expected to eventually outdo fuel as well as electric cars as the technology develops, but at the moment, electric power holds the cards to the future; but that could all change quite easily.

Self-Driving cars in just 2 years

We’ve already been introduced to self-driving cars thanks to the efforts of Elon Musk, Google and a handful of other institutions. This hales an exciting, science fiction inspired future for travel, but it is still in its early stages.

Original predictions gauged the presence of driverless cars on our roads in some ten years from now, however, recent developments have pushed this away to just 2 years.

A change in overall infrastructure

This arrival of driverless cars means that there will be a lot of changes to public infrastructure. We will likely see traffic lights and road signs done away with, little by little, since they will eventually become redundant. Electric cars are likely to change the face of petrol stations and even public roads as the need for solar power will rise.
