UPDATED JEEP CHEROKEE GETS FRESH FACE, NEW ENGINE
At the end of 2017, Jeep released a handful of images of its refreshed Cherokee. And now that the redesigned model has taken the stage at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, the US manufacturer has provided more details about the update.
We already knew that the Cherokee would gain a completely redesigned front end (ditching the outgoing model’s controversial separate lighting elements in favour of more traditional combined units) and some minor alterations to the rear. A few changes have also been made to the interior.
Inside, you’ll now find fresh satin-chrome and piano black high-gloss accents as well as what Jeep calls “improved packaging” and a new lightweight, hands-free automatic tailgate. Other additions include a redesigned centre console, repositioned to fit an extra storage compartment beneath.
The Cherokee also gains a new turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 201 kW and 400 N.m of torque, mated to an updated nine-speed automatic transmission. The 3,2-litre V6 Penstar and 2,4-litre Tigershark engines remain in the US range as well, but there’s still no turbodiesel option.
Jeep says the Cherokee’s various four-wheel-drive systems (the first is the basic system, the second adds a two-speed power transfer unit with low-range and the third – standard on Trailhawk variants – gains a mechanically locking rear differential) have also benefited from a few revisions.
FCA South Africa has confirmed plans to bring the revised Cherokee to local shores in the third quarter of 2018.
